Gaze-Based Communication Device for Patients with Locked-In Syndrome

Locked-In Syndrome (LIS) is a debilitating condition characterized by a near-complete loss of voluntary muscle control, rendering individuals unable to speak or move. In this paper, we present a Gaze-Based Communication Device designed specifically for individuals diagnosed with LIS. The device, powered by a Raspberry Pi and Pi Cam, aims to provide a means of communication for those with limited physical abilities. Utilizing the Raspberry Pi and Pi Cam, the system tracks the user’s eye movements in real-time. By analyzing patterns of eye movements and blink ratios, the device interprets the user’s intentions. When three consecutive blinks are detected, the system processes the sequence of eye movements and translates it into predefined messages using an associative dictionary. These messages are then converted into spoken output, allowing for audible communication. The device’s design and functionality focus on simplicity and effectiveness in aiding communication for individuals with LIS. Through accurate detection of blinks and interpretation of eye movements, our system offers a reliable method for users to convey their thoughts and needs. This technology holds promise in significantly enhancing the quality of life for LIS patients, providing them with a means to express themselves and interact with their surroundings more independently.
