Analysis on effects of mountain shadow on solar energy capacity at western slope of Gangtok city using Shadowmap 3D-GIS mapping tool

The research examines the influence of mountain shadow on the ability to generate solar electricity in the western slope of Gangtok, the capital city of state of Sikkim. An extensive study was conducted to examine the mean daily solar power insolation for a whole year, considering shadow effect from mountains. The study was carried out using a 3D GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping tool called the Shadowmap program. Solar radiation data was gathered to assess the amount of effective insolation received by the region, taking into account both direct and diffused sunshine. The study also evaluated the weekly fluctuations in altitude and azimuth angles experienced in the region. The study indicated an average energy loss of 21 percent due to the mountain shading effect. The effective altitude and azimuth angles range likewise was reduced by 15 and 10 percent, respectively compared to ideal calculation.
