Dead-zone-integrated Antenna Based on Spoof Surface Plasmon Polaritons with Via-less Restrictions

This paper presents a planar, single-layered antenna based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs). Slow waves can be converted into radiating waves by modulating the surface impedance of the SSPPs waveguide itself sinusoidally along its propagation direction. With the utilization of the single-sided defected square ring structure for SSPPs unit cell, the size of the proposed antenna is reduced, and the open- stopband effect which usually exists in symmetric structure can be eliminated. This antenna is designed for integrating in dead- zone area, in which only 0.3 mm width can be used for implementation. Numerical simulation results demonstrate a good performance of the design, which achieves a wide bandwidth from 54.3 GHz to 70 GHz, and it can scan continuously from the backward quadrant to the forward quadrant without gain reduction around the broadside direction.
