Steering Radiated Beam of a Helical Antenna Using Plasma Reflectors

This paper introduces a novel method to improve the steering capabilities of helical antennas with plasma reflectors. The proposed method is based on the implementation of two half-cup plasma reflectors. The study thoroughly examines the influence the dimensions of the second reflector on the radiation characteristics of the antenna. The results of fullwave electromagnetic simulations demonstrates the potential of the proposed method for electronic beam steering, achieving a remarkable steering of up to ±27 degrees. The strategic placement of the plasma reflectors on two sides of the helical antenna showcases promising steering capabilities. However, optimizing performance requires a delicate balance in reflector dimensions, crucial especially for maintaining circular polarization. Notably, this antenna design leverages the inherent controllability of the plasma reflectors, enabling selective activation and electrical adjustments in dimensions and positions.
