Monitoring of Limb Tremor Caused by Parkinson’s Disease

Introduction: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a disease of the central nervous system that occurs because neurons do not produce enough dopamine, resulting in lack of coordination, rigidity, and limb tremor. Purpose: To use a device that quantifies the magnitude of dominant upper extremity tremor in a PD patient using electrotherapies as an adjunct to pharmacological treatment to document its impact on limb tremor and determine the concordance of its monitoring. Materials and Methods: clinical case of a patient with PD submitted to 10 sessions of electrotherapy. Tremor was quantified with the MPU6050 accelerometer and symptom progression was assessed with the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Scale. Results: Measurements with the instrument show a reduction in tremor of about 55% and on the scale, there was a reduction in the rating of motor symptoms of 4 units. Discussion: Electrotherapies are based on the inhibition of motor neurons which causes tremor to decrease because they do not perceive the signals sent by the central nervous system, so patients undergoing these therapies and drugs have an improvement in the motor symptoms of PD.
