Ethical Advancements from the Tuskegee Experiment

The Tuskegee Study was an experiment conducted from 1932 to 1972 in America in order to look at the effects of syphilis. The study walks on thin ethical ice as it was conducted on low-income African American men without informed consent and available medical assistance. This had many adverse effects on the subjects of the experiment, as well as their family, friends, and descendants. Looking back on it, now almost 90 years later, the ethical wrongdoings become obvious. This paper dives into the details on the ethical missteps of this experiment, the actions that should have been taken, and how it has transformed how we see the ethics of human experimentation today in the 21st century.
