Space Radiation Flux Driven Fault Injection for Evaluating Dynamic Mitigation Strategies

In aerospace applications, the demand for highly reliable systems necessitates advanced dynamic fault mitigation strategies to achieve the trade-off between system reliability, performance, and power efficiency in dynamic space radiation environments. However, traditional fault injection methods fall short in simulating space radiation dynamics, particularly during solar events, thus hindering the effective assessment and optimization of dynamic systems. To bridge this gap, this paper introduces a fault injection approach based on the dynamic fluctuations of space radiation. This approach combines historical space radiation data with existing fault injection techniques, enabling a synchronized fault injection that reflects dynamic radiation variations. A case study utilizing dynamic SRAM scrubbing with the HSIAO EDAC code is presented to validate the efficiency of the proposed approach. With this purpose, we evaluate the approach’s adaptability to one real historical solar event and benchmark it against five conventional static space models. The results show that our approach not only more accurately simulates the actual radiation environment but also enhances the performance of the dynamic SRAM scrubbing method by up to 16 times compared to analyses using traditional static space radiation models.
