Decentralized Adaptive Control Strategy of DC—DC Boost Converter for Hybrid Energy Storage Systems Feeding CPLs

This article proposes an adaptive nonlinear control approach to stabilize the lithium-ion battery/supercapacitor (LB/SC) hybrid energy storage system (HESS) feeding constant power loads (CPLs) and achieve precise trajectory tracking for the dynamic HESS with mismatched disturbances. Specifically, the HESS is constructed as Brunovsky’s canonical form transformed by feedback linearization of the differential model. The dynamic signals are processed such that the LB only handles low-frequency signals and the SC responds to high-frequency signals. A high-order robust disturbance observer (HORDO) is addressed to realize the disturbance estimation and fast dynamic tracking. An adaptive nonlinear controller using the disturbance estimation is developed in a nonrecursive form to guarantee the HESS stability under large signals, where an adaptive regulatory mechanism is established for improving control performance. Simulations and experimental examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
