Revolutionizing the Battery Performance by an Innovative Approach to Balance the Cells

Batteries made up of Lithium-ion cells have become an essential component in various applications like locomotives, portable devices, etc. These battery packs contain large number of Li-ion cells in it. Due to their improper usage and aging, the conditions of different cells become unbalanced, which leads to decrease in their performance. So, an effective cell balancing technique is needed for enhancing the performance of these systems. For that, this article introduces a novel approach to balance the cells, by employing Flyback Converter integrated with Cuk Converter along with State-of-Charge based feedback mechanism to regulate the supply from the converter for balancing the cells. This system begins by supplying a DC voltage source to the flyback converter, which ensures seamless energy transfer between the cells and the main supply. The Cuk converter with its robust voltage regulation capabilities ensures stable voltage supply for balancing the cells. Individual cell conditions are continuously monitored and used as feedback to balance the cells based on their State-of-Charge level. This proposed cell equalizing technique enhances the overall performance and reduces the effects like over-charging due to unbalanced state of the cells in the energy storage system. The working of this proposed model is simulated using the MATLAB SIMULINK software.
