Performance of Tri-Band Hexagonal Split-Ring Resonator Antennas For WLAN, Bluetooth and WiMAX Applications

Novel triband closed hexagonal split-ring resonator (CH-SRR) with metallic loading and open hexagonal split-ring resonator (OH-SRR) antennas using CPW-feed are proposed These antennas are simulated on an affordable FR4 substrate with a size of 38x38mm². The antenna's return loss, radiation pattern, and surface current propagation are examined. The findings show that the OH-SRR antenna offers a good radiation efficiency of 82.69%, 82.49%, and 73.82% at 2.4 GHz, 3.78 GHz, and 5.775 GHz resonating frequencies, while the CH-SRR antenna offers a broad impedance bandwidth of 12.85% (2.345-2.66 GHz), 41.40% (3.14-4.705 GHz), and 10.56% (5.39-6 GHz) respectively. Both antennas are reportedly compact offering moderate gain between 1 to 3.8 dBi in the frequency band of 2.4-6 GHz. For both antennas, Dumbbell-shaped broader E-plane and narrower H-plane patterns are obtained, and as frequency increases, the radiation patterns become more directional, which results in high gain. Thus, these proposed antennas are suitable candidates for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and WiMAX applications.
