Analyzing the Impact of the Fault Ride-Through Strategies of Renewable Generation Units on Power System Rotor-Angle Stability and Voltage Security

The prevalence of modern power systems incorporating renewable energy sources such as wind and solar is steadily increasing. However, this positive trend presents specific challenges to the security of power systems, primarily due to the fault ride-through characteristics associated with these renewable generation units. In this paper, we propose a quasi-steady-state model for renewable generation units fully capturing their ride-through strategies. Additionally, a two-machine system model is formulated, considering the seamless integration of these renewable energy units. Through a meticulous analysis and computation of the relationships between electromagnetic power and rotor angles, as well as the connection between rotor angles and the transient voltage at the connection point, the study reveals that the conventional fault ride-through strategy of “reducing active power, increasing reactive power” for renewable energy units may not consistently contribute to enhancing the transient rotor-angle stability of the system. The research underscores that the effectiveness of fault ride-through control is contingent upon both the transient angular stability of the system and the location of the connection point for the renewable energy source.
