Modeling and Control of A BTB-VSC-HVDC Using Virtual Synchronous Generator Strategy

For the utilization of the back-to-back voltage-source-converter HVDC (BTB-VSC-HVDC), the risk of power system frequency instability should be carefully concerned, and the demand for investigating control strategies that can provide frequency support is on the rise. This paper explores the BTBVSC-HVDC’s modeling and control with frequency support capability, and a virtual synchronous generator (VSG) strategy is suggested. Firstly, the system topology and fundamental control philosophy of the BTB-VSC-HVDC are demonstrated. Then, a BTB-VSC-HVDC control based on the VSG strategy is designed, and the parameters adjustment method is stated. Finally, a detailed model regarding the BTB-VSC-HVDC using the suggested method is built in SIMULINK, and comparative case studies are conducted. The simulation results manifest that the BTB-VSC-HVDC under the proposed control can realize a beneficial frequency regulation and maintain a favorable voltage synchronization, verifying the proposed strategy’s adaptability and efficiency.
