Mid/Long-term Operation Simulation Method and Its Application for New Power System Planning

The increasing penetration of renewable power has created significant issues to power system planning and operation. Considering volatility, stochasticity, and source-load temporal correlation, a mid/long-term operation simulation method for new power system planning is proposed. Firstly, requirements for operation simulation are analyzed based on the characteristics of new power system planning. Then the overall framework of the operation simulation method is clarified. Considering accuracy and complexity, load block curves for each week of the year and new energy probability model are established. Temporal correlation between new energy and load is preserved in the mid/long-term timescale. Finally, a mid/long-term operation simulation model is developed to minimize the comprehensive cost, taking into account unit and system constraints. The validity and practicality of the suggested method have been confirmed by case studies conducted on both the modified IEEE-RTS and the real provincial system.
