A Method for Evaluating the Full Life Cycle Benefits of Hybrid Energy Storage Systems

In recent years, Wind Turbine (WT) has grown rapidly due to its advantage of low environmental impact. Energy storage system (ESS) is usually equipped to smooth the random output of WT. Due to the irregularity of charge and discharge, the life cycle benefits of ESS are difficult to be accurately evaluated. Therefore, a full life cycle benefits evaluation method of hybrid energy storage system (HESS) is proposed in this paper to evaluate the full life economic benefits of different project schemes. Two optimization models are proposed to simulate the operation of HESS and evaluate the benefit in each day during consecutive days. Specifically, day-ahead scheduling model is used to optimize the declared power curve. Intra-day scheduling model is used to optimize the scheduling scheme of WT and HESS. Combining two models and considering the life loss of charge-discharge switching of HESS, the full life cycle benefits can be adequately evaluated. Case studies demonstrate the effectiveness and performance of the proposed method.
