Analysis of Damage Forms of MOV Under Different Waveforms Striking

MOV are subject to thermal and impact damage under multiple conditions. In this paper, to address the issue of the impact in different waveforms at a high current on the damage form of the MOV, we set up a test platform and measured the impact of the three waveforms of 8/20μs lightning current, sinusoidal half-wave of 120μs, and sinusoidal half-wave of 210μs on the damage form of the MOV, and the test results show that: (1) the current on the MOV due to the existence of skin effect makes the surface more susceptible to damage; (2) according to the lightning current and sinusoidal half-wave on the MOV caused by the form of damage can be concluded that the higher the steepness of the rise of the peak value of the current, the MOV is more likely to form the perforation damage; (3) different wavelengths of the sinusoidal half-wave test results show that, under the conditions of the same form of waveforms, the longer the wavelength the MOV t damage is more serious, the more prone to form the perforation damage.
