Fault Analysis of Guangdong Power Grid in China During 2023 Super Typhoon Saola

Low-probability but high-impact extreme weather events pose great threats and challenges to the safe and stable operation of the power grid. On September 2, 2023, super typhoon Saola landed in Guangdong Province, China, causing multiple power transmission lines to trip, transformation and distribution equipment to be damaged, resulting in long-term power outages in some areas. Based on the data collected by Guangdong Power Grid Co., Ltd during the typhoon, this paper first introduces the meteorological characteristics of super typhoon Saola. Then, it analyzes the fault of transmission, transformation, and distribution equipment, and concludes the causes of line tripping and equipment damage. Finally, the countermeasures are put forward from three aspects: pre-disaster prevention, defense during the disaster, and post-disaster restoration, to minimize the loss of the power grid during typhoon disasters.
