Validation of a 2D FEM Model for an PMSM with Uniform Pole Demagnetization and Partitioned Windings

This work presents the experimental validation of a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) model with uniform pole demagnetization. Rotor demagnetization may become irreversible if it is not detected early, causing a decrease in torque and performance of PMSM. Uniform pole demagnetization is detected by measuring voltages on half of each phase of an PMSM with partitioned windings. 2D model implemented by the finite element method (FEM) is presented that reproduces the characteristics of a PMSM prototype with modified rotor. Results from the 2D FEM model are presented for the PMSM operating with different uniform demagnetization conditions. Finally, the experimental results obtained in the laboratory validate the simulation signals against different angular speeds and load transients.
