Implementation of a Whitening Strategy in the Processing of Argentine Weather Radar Data

In this work, various strategies are implemented to estimate spectral moments from data acquired by Argentine Meteorological Radars. The employed strategies operate on the in-phase and quadrature samples of the range echoes, obtained at a frequency higher than the bandwidth of the transmitted pulse, which determines the range resolution, a condition known as oversampling. In conjunction with the whitening transformation, which allows decorrelating the oversampled signal for each range cell and combining it appropriately, a significant reduction in the variance of the estimates is achieved. This improvement is particularly noticeable when there is a good signal-to-noise ratio relationship.
