Design of Wearable Textile Antenna for Wireless Body Area Network

Usage and applications of microstrip patch antenna for transmitting bio-signals in body area networking has been improved in recent years. Microstrip patch antenna finds wide applications in areas such as medical, scientific, military and radar domains. These antennas are opted for its light weight and easy fabrication. Designing of such microstrip patch antenna is simple and inexpensive and it has manufacturing flexibility for various configurations and polarizations. Microstrip patch antennas are capable of double and triple frequency operations and have linear and circular polarizations. This paper aims to design the microstrip patch antenna using JEANS substrate for Ultra wide band frequency (UWB) between 2.3GHz-6.41GHz which is suitable for WBAN applications. This research aims at antenna for WBAN application which has been designed and verified using Ansys HFSS software for various performance metrics such as Return loss, Gain, VSWR and Radiation Pattern. The substrate material is changed to polyester and leather and the other design parameters are kept the same. Gain and return loss for the desired operating frequency range are plotted and analyzed with various substrates. The designed antenna is placed on the phantom model and proved to be effective for WBAN applications.
