Metal oxide semiconductors possess a range of enticing features that make them highly attractive for various applications. Notably, even in their amorphous state, they exhibit exceptional carrier mobilities. Furthermore, they demonstrate remarkable resilience against mechanical stress and compatibility with organic dielectric and photoactive materials. Moreover, oxide semiconductors boast high optical transparency. Consequently, they have garnered significant attention in research fields such as optoelectronics, thin‐film transistors, diodes, photocatalysts, gas sensors, solar cells, and memory devices. This chapter, as an introduction to this book, aims to provide an overview of several prominent n‐ and p‐type oxide semiconductors, emphasizing their crystal and electronic structures.
