Channel Estimation and Data Detection using Coarse Quantization for Multiuser MIMO OFDM Systems

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) employs multiple carriers, providing significant spectral efficiency, less distortion resulting from multipath transmission. The incorporation of Multiuser Multiple Input Multiple Output (MU-MIMO) with OFDM enables the construction of an efficient method of communication over frequency selectivity channels. The impact of strong interference in the adjacent band on quantized MIMO systems has not been conducted so far. In this paper, coarse quantization-based Maximum-a-Posteriori (MAP) channel estimation and Minimum-Mean Squared-Error (MMSE) data detection methods, was introduced, and their performance trade-offs were investigated. Our research findings indicate that implementing coarse quantization in a MU-MIMO OFDM does not introduce any additional complexity cost in the baseband processing. Moreover, this approach does not lead to any significant performance degradation when compared to the scenario where infinite precision is assumed.
