X-band Waveform Generator with Calibration feature for Active Phased Array Radar

This paper describes the architecture of Waveform Generator along with calibration feature for X-Band Active Phased Array Radar application. It is based on a hybrid synthesizer architecture using Direct Digital Synthesizer (DDS) and Phase Locked Loop (PLL). Module generates Linear Frequency Modulated X-Band frequency during transmit mode and IF (Intermediate Frequency) offseted X-Band spot frequency during receive mode which minimize the hardware requirement. It also has a phase calibration feature for Radar transmit and receive chain. Along with the waveform generation this module is also generating the timing and controls required for the entire Radar sub modules. It is realized on a single multilayer PCB without any degradation in performance.
