Traffic Control System Using AI Camera and Time of Flight Sensor

Traffic congestion is becoming a serious problem in cities, where the number of vehicles and drivers with licenses is considerably rising. Therefore, an effective traffic control system is important to decrease traffic congestion, In this paper, we build a prototype of a smart traffic control system for traffic control employing an AI camera and a ToF (Time-of-Flight) sensor. The AI camera detects people who are waiting at pedestrian crossing, and counts the number of them. The ToF sensor detects vehicles stopping at crossing. Based on the number of people waiting and detection of vehicles, traffic and pedestrian lights are controlled. Our prototype incorporates several key components including the M5Stack U nitV2 AI camera, the ToF sensor, the Atom Lite ESP32 development board, the M5StickC Plus micro controller, and the Arduino Mega 2560 micro controller board. The Arduino Mega 2560, which serves as the system's main controller, receives real-time data from the AI camera and the ToF sensor. The Arduino Mega 2560 is in-charge of controlling traffic and pedestrian lights, which optimizes the movement of both vehicles and pedestrian traffic. After implementation of the system, we test it under various conditions to guarantee the system operations, by use of a miniature model. Then, we confirm the system works as expected.
