Designing and Developing a Smart Wheelchair System using Raspberry Pi Comprising Hydrogel based Cushion and Pressure Mapping System to Prevent Decubitus Ulcers

Pressure ulcers, commonly known as bedsores, arise due to prolonged pressure on the skin, impacting both the epidermis and underlying tissues, typically occurring in bony areas of the body. With around 15% of the global population facing disabilities and a staggering 131.8 million individuals reliant on wheelchairs, addressing this health concern becomes paramount. A pioneering study presents an inventive approach to wheelchair design, specifically targeting the prevention of decubitus ulcers, prevalent and debilitating among wheelchair users. This system integrates cutting-edge technology and innovative materials, featuring a Raspberry Pi microcontroller and a revolutionary hydrogel-based cushion to proactively combat this condition. The cushion, a material science breakthrough, excels in pressure distribution and moisture management, significantly mitigating the risk of pressure sores for wheelchair users. Moreover, the system incorporates a pressure mapping system with advanced sensors for continuous monitoring of pressure points, providing essential feedback for optimized weight redistribution. The research explores inventive methods for adjusting seating positions to prevent decubitus and alleviate pressure points, working proactively to prevent ulcers. Additionally, an obstacle detection program enhances mobility solutions for wheelchair users, ensuring unparalleled comfort and actively preventing the development of decubitus ulcers.
