FaceCrypt: Securing Workplaces Based on Facial Recognition and Visual Cryptography

Physical Access Control Systems (PACS) are essential in many industries, but they have often relied on single-factor authentication methods that are vulnerable to security threats. To address this, we introduce FaceCrypt, a dual-factor authentication framework that combines facial recognition with access cards using visual cryptography. FaceCrypt uses advanced deep-learning techniques to extract 128-dimensional facial features for accurate identification. A confidential QR code image is generated as the second authentication factor using visual cryptographic algorithms. This QR code contains individual user-specific random numbers, which are split into two shares. One share is stored in the access card and the other is stored in the database. When a user presents their access card, the two shares are combined to decrypt the QR code image. If the image is valid, the user is granted access. FaceCrypt provides significantly enhanced security over traditional PACS systems while maintaining operational efficiency. It is a promising new approach to physical access control that can help organizations protect their facilities and assets.
