On-Site Impact Factor and Dynamic Response Estimation Using Image Processing for Quay Gantry Crane

Quay cranes play a vital role in port operations. The dynamic loads encountered during operation can cause vibrations and impact forces on the crane, increasing the danger of fatigue damage and structural failure. As a result, the accurate estimation of the crane's dynamic response and impact factor is vital and usually beyond specifications. This study proposes a novel approach that uses image processing technique to better understand the quay crane behavior onsite during operation while overcoming the challenges of other contact sensors such as complex installation and data analysis procedures, noise sensitivity, and high costs. The proposed method provides realtime and accurate dynamic displacement data in two directions. The estimated of the sudden lifting impact factor was about 50%, which must be considered in design, improves quay crane finite element simulations to better represent actual operation conditions, and contributes to the development of critical structure maintenance strategies.
