Summary

Electrical machines are used to transfer the energy from one form to another form, i.e., transferring the energy from mechanical form to electrical form or electrical form to mechanical form. The machines which deal with Direct Current (DC) are called DC machines. The Fleming's right hand rule is used to find the direction of induced EMF of the DC generator. i.e. Fleming's right hand rule used to determine the direction the current flows. This chapter provides information on the EMF equation of DC generator, torque equation of a DC motor, circuit model, and methods of excitation. It includes discussions on the magnetizing and load characteristics of DC generators, the types and characteristics of DC motors, and the necessity for starters. The speed control of a DC shunt motor is obtained by three ways: flux control, armature control or rheostat control, and applied voltage control.
