Design and Analysis of On‐Body Wearable Antenna with AMC Backing for ISM Band Applications

Current research has mostly concentrated on the wearable devices to track the Human activity monitoring system, improvement of the health care facility and communication between the users aimed for the wellbeing of society. The growing attention given to wearable device technologies is attracting Smart clothing and facilitating communication between people and wireless devices. In this process, wearable antennas are playing an important role in the communication between clothes and the surrounding environment. In most cases the antenna operates in contact with human bodies, which is a hostile environment for the electromagnetic waves for propagation. The problem can be resolved by adopting an appropriate design with reduced backpropagation using AMC structure, which will allow propagation of waves without interfering with the human body and reduce the Specific Absorption Rates.

This chapter concentrates on the design aspects of Wearable Antenna for ISM (Industrial Scientific Medical), WBAN and other Medical applications. The designed antenna with the placement of AMC (Artificial Magnetic Conductor) as backing to improve the gain and communication capacity is proposed. The gain enhanced AMC backed flexible antenna is studied for its performance characteristics with different locations of the phantom. The study is carried out by measuring different parameters of the antenna. The designed antenna is compared with prototype antenna measurement results, and real‐time applications are analyzed.
