3GPP Release 16 and Beyond

Summary

In this chapter, a brief highlight of the various enhancements of existing features and the addition of new services or capabilities requirements, in terms of reliability, mobility, latency, and so on, added as part of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 16 and Release 17 of the 5G system is described. The chapter describes some of the enhancements made, as part of 3GPP Release 16, in the existing features of Release 15 features of the 5G system. It also describes some of the new features for different application areas or verticals such as the industrial internet of things and electrical power distribution factory automatons that are being envisaged as part of the 3GPP Release 16 of the 5G system. The 3GPP Release 17 also enhances the existing features as well as introduces new features to address new applications/verticals, use cases, and so on on top of the Release 16.
