Multichannel and Multifunction Interferometric Receiver Architectures for Multistandard Millimeter-Wave and Terahertz Applications

This paper presents and discusses our recent work on the development of millimeter-wave (mmW) and terahertz (THz) multiport interferometric receivers. Our interest is geared towards the creation of highly original linear interferometric architectures with focus on the integration of multichannel, multifunction, low power, and polarization-diversified compact front-end systems. Based on the proposed receiver architectures, experimental prototypes have been realized and demonstrated for validation. In this work, a self-contained dual-input multiport interferometric architecture was studied and applied in multichannel MIMO systems. An all-in-one monoblock interferometric waveguide receiver was developed for multifunction and dual-polarized wireless systems such as integrated sensing and communication (ISAC). For the first time, a unified microwave and THz interferometric front-end, concurrently operating at 5.8 GHz and 150 GHz, was derived and demonstrated theoretically and experimentally, enabling a future fully-scale integration of data transfer, energy harvesting, and sensing operation.
