The Dynamic Rate Degradation Model: Interdependence in Li-ion Battery Degradation Mechanisms

The dynamic rate degradation model is a parameter-based battery degradation model that calculates capacity loss for arbitrary duty cycles and applications. The model is unique because it is a parameter-based model that accounts for the coupling of degradation mechanisms used to determine loss of battery capacity. Capacity loss is calculated via numerical integration of degradation rate determined as a function of time, current, voltage, and degradation conditions. Degradation path dependence is built into the model. As such, this model can be used to estimate capacity loss associated with arbitrary use cases, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), electric vehicles (EVs), and other battery powered systems. This paper presents a collection of results assuming electric UAVs have been flown with user-specified payloads in wide ranging temperature conditions with variable changes in flight elevation. Results indicate battery degradation can be quickly estimated for arbitrary power demands associated with an arbitrary operating environment.
