The CloudSat Mission: A 25-Year NASA Success Story

The CloudSat satellite mission originated over 25 years ago and has evolved considerably over its more than 17 years on-orbit. As with many missions that began as competitive, cost-capped proposals, significant technical and programmatic challenges were often encountered across both the development and post-launch operations phases. These included engineering and science trades associated with an advanced mission navigation concept, subsystem development issues, cost overruns, and unexpected problems occurring during the launch and early orbit phases. Operational implementation of a revolutionary mission navigation design and several major on-orbit hardware anomalies added to these issues, and resolving them necessitated the application of innovative system engineering skills and analysis.This paper will provide an overview of how these many challenges evolved, approaches the CloudSat flight team utilized to analyze them, and solutions that eventually led to long-term mission success. A summary of key lessons learned from these efforts is included, which could help guide future missions with similar issues and problems. Several of the major science and applications benefits enabled by the mission are also highlighted, along with the wealth of scientific accomplishments enabled by the CloudSat radar observations.
