Multi-Period Transmission Expansion Planning Considering Hybrid AC and HVDC Systems and the Integration of PV Generation

A new multi-period transmission planning method is presented in this article to choose optimal solutions among the suggested HVAC and HVDC lines for installation in consecutive periods over a long-term planning horizon. The appropriate selection of the new lines from the candidate HVAC and HVDC lines helps the power system operators meet the predicted load growth under normal operation and N-k contingencies. Hence, the proposed method tries to minimize an optimization problem with different objective functions including installation costs of new HVAC and HVDC lines while minimizing the active power losses and improving the resilience of the grid against N-1 events. Large-scale PV generations are also considered in the proposed TEP. To cope with the mixed integer nonlinear feature of the TEP problem, the particle swarm optimization algorithm is utilized. All the computations and simulations were accomplished in MATLAB software. MATPOWER toolbox is also used for power flow analysis. The simulation result on the IEEE 24-bus system approves the efficacy of the suggested approach.
