Non-Transmission Expansion Alternatives for Southwest Power Pool

This paper explores the role of “non-transmission alternatives” in addressing electricity grid constraints and transmission expansion planning in the future of the Southwest Power Pool. These alternatives include power flow controllers, flexible AC transmission systems, dynamic line rating and ambient adjusted rating, remedial action systems, energy storage resources, demand response programs, energy efficiency, and distributed energy resources. By evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of these alternatives, this paper offers recommendations for the most suitable alternatives for the Southwest Power Pool.
