Environmental Impact Assessment of Assisted Ventilation

Environmental impacts of products and services have become a critical factor globally, highlighting the need for sustainable practices to protect both human health and the planet. This research demonstrates a life cycle assessment (LCA) of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) with assisted ventilation of a hospital, to examine the associated environmental impacts. This study conducts a cradle-to-grave LCA, using openLCA software, which focuses on the consumables employed in assisted ventilation, including the breathing circuit, breathing bag, gloves, face mask, electricity consumption, and oxygen usage. The consumables used in assisted ventilation were listed from Dhaka Medical Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh, while material input data were gathered from relevant previous literature and public databases. The results indicate that electricity consumption and oxygen usage have the most significant impact on environmental factors.
