Textile Based Shielding Materials

Summary

Electromagnetic waves emitted from electronic equipment affect both human health and other electronic devices negatively. Electromagnetic shielding textile materials are used to produce multifunctional and interactive new generation structures. Textile shielding materials are produced from conductive polymers, metallic fibers, metal wires, metallic coated yarns, or composite yarns. Composite yarns are produced by wrapping or doubling of wires with cotton, polyester, or wool yarns. EMI shielding is a way to attenuate the unwanted electromagnetic fields. Concerning textile materials, specific fabrics used for EM shielding can be obtained with similar processes to those used for antistatic materials. Conductive textile fabrics are made by introducing conductive fibers such as carbon, stainless steel, copper, and so on along with textile fibers. Electromagnetic shielding properties vary and they depend on the conductivity of the shielding material. The production methods of electromagnetic shielding fabrics are weaving, knitting, nonwoven, or co‐weaving knitting with conductive materials.
