Liquid Crystal Cell Process

Summary

This chapter explains the manufacturing process of the liquid crystal cell fabrication using large mother glasses, including the latest fabrication techniques of large size vertical alignment (VA) or in‐plane switching (IPS) liquid crystal display (LCD). A new color filter (CF) process, namely COA (color filter on array) with color filters patterned directly on the thin‐film transistor (TFT) substrates, has been recently developed and widely used. The chapter reviews the manufacturing process of liquid crystal cell fabrication. The cell fabrication process includes the steps for applying alignment layer material on a substrate, forming alignment layers for controlling the direction of liquid crystals molecules, applying sealant on the glass substrate and filling liquid crystal materials, assembling the TFT array and CF array glass substrates, and cutting the assembled substrates into LCD cells. The chapter provides not only basic understanding of the LC cell fabrication process but also updated knowledge on the fabrication techniques for large‐sized LCD panels.
