A Wireless Headset Biosensor Measuring Volatile Chemicals Emitted from the Auris Externa for Monitoring Metabolisms

The auris externa (AE) releases high concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are volatile metabolic markers in the blood. However, there is no device to measure VOCs from AE in a stand-alone and continuous format. Here, we investigate the possibility of wearable gas-phase optical biosensors with help of high water-retaining enzyme-immobilized careers. The developed system can measure 0.01-300 ppm of ethanol gas and showed high selectivity. Although issues remain for long-term observation, the system was possible to measure ethanol in AE gas emitted from an alcohol- consumed person.
