Location Monitoring of Overhead Power Lines Using a Lightning Protection Cable

The authors propose an intelligent location sensing system which automatically detects problems in the power supply network and takes measures to prevent accidents. The decision-making algorithm is based on pulse sensing of overhead power lines. The location equipment is connected to 35 - 750 kV air lines via connection filter and a high-voltage communication capacitor, which transmit technological information from relay protection and emergency automation equipment to the high-frequency path of the line. For overhead lines that do not have such equipment, location pulses can be applied via a lightning protection cable (ground wire) provided on 35 - 750 kV lines. Simulation of this process in PSCAD system shows that the energy of microsecond-long sounding pulses is sufficient for effective and reliable detection of damage to the line wires.
