Electronic Paper

Electronic paper and e‐paper are electronic information displays that mimic the appearance of ordinary ink on paper. The main technologies that could be coined as of electronic‐paper displays are electrophoretic display, electrowetting display, electrochromic display, and cholesteric liquid crystal display. This chapter describes the most important technologies in more detail. In 2010, electrowetting operation on paper substrates was shown to function and have switching behavior comparable to electrowetting on glass substrates. This has increased the interest in flexible electrowetting displays. In You's work, the operation of electrowetting structures on several types of flexible substrates (paper, plastic, and metal) has been demonstrated, indicating the feasibility of using these substrates as a cheap and flexible option for electrowetting‐based e‐paper displays. Micro‐electromechanical systems display – also called IMOD – is a technology that can create various colors via interference of reflected light.
