Mechanical Behavior of Thermal Spray Coatings

Summary

Thermal spray coating as any other industrial product must be tested for quality assurance after deposition. Coating properties vary with the deposition technique and is strongly dependent on spraying conditions and feedstock material. The mechanical behavior of the coating is a combined response of coating microstructure and its constituents. Thermal spray coatings are tested at research and development stage to ascertain the adhesion‐cohesion strength, bending strength, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. The tests are conducted as per the service condition requirements, most tests focus on the mechanical behavior of the coating and performance in working environment. The aim of this chapter is to inform the readers about various methods that can be used to analyze the mechanical behavior of the coating. The focus of the chapter is to successively described fracture toughness of coatings, effect of microstructure on fracture toughness, evaluation of residual stress (RS) and its effect on properties of the coating, Young's modulus and hardness of the coating and its effect on coating properties, effect of coating microstructure on mechanical behavior, and the effect of various reinforcements on the mechanical behavior of the coating.
