Design and Production of Game-based Learning CAI Courseware for Primary School Chinese Literacy in the First Period

The primary emphasis in the initial stage of primary school Chinese language education in China is on literacy, yet the current outcomes in terms of students' literacy skills are far from satisfactory. Game-based learning literacy CAI courseware makes up for the shortcomings of traditional literacy teaching because it is rich in multimedia and interesting games, which can create a literacy context and stimulate learners' motivation. However, this study found that there is a lack of research on the design and production of game-based learning literacy CAI courseware. Therefore, this study analyzes existing multimedia teaching software design methodology, CAI courseware design model, and educational game development methodology to refine the design process of game-based learning CAI courseware for primary school Chinese literacy in the first period: requirements analysis, overall design, detailed design, coding and debugging, and iterative refinement. In addition, under the guidance of constructivism theory, flow theory, and word-based literacy teaching method, this study creates the courseware “Literacy Planet” based on the design process with the Chinese characters “” for the second book of the first grade of the Ministry of Education (MOE) version of the Chinese textbook. This study aims to enrich the research on game-based learning literacy CAI courseware, increase students' interest in literacy, and provide frontline teachers with cases and inspiration for designing and producing literacy courseware.
