Physical Model Recognition-Based AR Application to Support Preschool Science Learning

Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that can closely combine the virtual world with the real world. There have been many studies using AR in preschool learning. However, there is a lack of empirical research exploring the educational influence of using physical model recognition-based AR in preschool science learning. To fill this gap, this study developed a physical model recognition-based AR learning tool for preschool science learning. Our quasi-experimental used a pretest and posttest to measure academic achievement, and a questionnaire to measure students' level of happiness and enjoyment in preschool science learning using the physical model recognition-based AR learning tool. We divided 60 children aged 5–6 into experimental and traditional groups according to classes. The experimental group learned science using the physical model recognition-based AR learning tool whereas the traditional group learned the same material through traditional teaching methods. The results indicated that the experimental group obtained significantly higher academic records than the traditional group. In addition, the experimental group had a high level of happiness and enjoyment when using the physical model recognition-based AR learning tool in science learning.
