Line Commutated Converter Based on Integrated Gate Commutated Thyristor

UHVDC transmission technology has been widely used in China. However, the commutation failure of multi-infeed HVDC systems has been a persistent issue affecting the safe and stable operation of large power grids. To address this problem, a converter based on the integrated gate commutated thyristor (IGCT) is proposed. By conducting a detailed analysis of the topology and commutation process of the IGCT converter, as well as comparing the steady-state and transient performance with a thyristor converter, it has been verified that the IGCT converter can effectively prevent commutation failure by actively turning off the current. This research paper reveals the principle of commutation area invariance in line commutation converters and offers a new direction for the application of IGCT in HVDC transmission technology. These findings hold significant theoretical and practical significance for establishing a safer, more efficient, and higher-power HVDC transmission system.
