Multi-Temporal Flexibility Requirement Evaluation Considering the Correlation of Renewable Energy

In the context of evolving energy infrastructure, the inexorable shift towards low carbonization is apparent. A prominent characteristic of future power systems will be the substantial integration of renewable energy sources, notably wind and solar power. These resources are inherently correlated to some extent, and ignoring this correlation could result in suboptimal decisions in power system optimization, scheduling, and planning. Additionally, prior research has introduced methodologies to evaluate power system flexibility requirement by examining mismatches. However, these approaches have primarily focused on assessing flexibility requirement based on predefined wind and solar profiles. This study generates multiple output scenarios that account for the interrelationship between wind and solar resources, and it quantifies changes in mismatch coefficients across various temporal scales, thus providing an analysis of how wind-solar correlations impact flexibility requirement. With heightened correlation levels resulting in increased system flexibility requirement, particularly in the context of short-term flexibility needs. We also conducted a sensitivity analysis on the wind-solar ratio. With the increase in wind-solar capacity ratio, flexibility requirements at various time scales show a trend of initially decreasing and then increasing. Specifically, at the daily time scale, the influence of the correlation coefficient on the mismatch coefficient exhibits the highest sensitivity to changes in wind-solar ratios.
