Adaptability Study of Damping Control Strategies for Low-Frequency Oscillation in Power Grid with High Penetration of Photovoltaic

The stability of power systems is experiencing significant challenges due to the increased penetration of photovoltaic (PV) and the complexity of the power grid. Given that PV plants are responsible for suppressing low-frequency oscillations (LFOs), damping control strategies working on PV must be broadly and adaptably adaptable. This paper discusses two types of power oscillation damping control (PODC) strategies, one based on a wide-area power differentiation signal (i.e. Strategy-A) and the other based on a local grid frequency signal (i.e. Strategy-B). A four-generator two-area system with high penetration of PV is employed to test the adaptability of the two strategies based on the PRONY algorithm. From the results, it is demonstrated that the two strategies can adapt to each PV integration location; when used at more locations, the strategies may combine to produce a synergy effect greater than the sum of its parts. The adaptive regularity of the damping control strategies has extensive significance for engineering reference.
