Coordinated Planning of HVDC Terminal and Multi-Time Scale Energy Storage in Multi-Area Hybrid AC/DC Power System

High requirements for flexibility of power systems are put forward due to the increasing penetration of renewable energy. The requirements for “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality” goals, as well as the imbalanced geographical distribution of renewable energy resources in China, will objectively promote the development of power grid interconnection via high voltage direct current (HVDC). In the regional AC power grid with high penetration of renewable energy, inter-regional power transmission and energy storage technology can realize spatial and temporal energy transfer. The coordinated planning of energy storage and HVDC terminal location, leveraging their complementary benefits, is an important way to improve the security and economy of future clean power systems. Based on technical economy, a configuration optimization method for location and capacity of HVDC terminal and energy storage that adapts to the scale of renewable energy is proposed in this paper. Based on the numerical analysis of provincial network data, the coordinated planning results of location and capacity of HVDC terminals and energy storage in 2030 are given. The results show that by optimizing the layout of HVDC transmission and energy storage at different time scales, the spatial and temporal flexibility of both can be fully utilized, reducing the demand for the flexibility of conventional power sources, improving the operation economic efficiency, and reducing carbon emissions in the power system.
