Economic Analysis of Energy Storage System for Peak Shaving Considering Its Participation Sequence

As the development of photovoltaic and wind power, the intermittent renewable energy sources with a large scale are connected to the grid, putting peak shaving pressure on the grid, so the grid needs ES for peak shaving. However, the grid-side energy storage (ES) operates with the question of whether it should shave peak before or after regulating for traditional generators. In response to the debate of “prioritization of thermal generators for peak shaving (PTGPS) or prioritization of energy storage for peak shaving (PESPS)”, this paper establishes prioritization of thermal generators for peak shaving operation strategy and prioritization of energy storage for peak shaving operation strategy. Firstly, this paper analyses the data using the time-series production simulation to obtain the required renewable energy curtailment space and energy storage discharge space. Secondly, this paper establishes an operation model of prioritization of thermal generators for peak shaving and an operation model of prioritization of energy storage for peak shaving. Finally, the results of the designed example show that the prioritization of energy storage for peak shaving strategy has the advantage of improving the energy storage utilization.
