An Improved Segmented Control Strategy for Inertial Response

In recent years, variable-speed wind turbine generator (WTG), typified by doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG), are being applied on a large scale in the clean energy market. However, due to the structural characteristics of DFIG, their large-scale integration into the power grid has raised significant frequency-related issues, such as a reduction in system inertia. Research into novel frequency control measures for wind power integration into the grid is of paramount importance to ensure the frequency stability of the modern power system. This paper proposes an improved segmented control strategy for virtual inertia. The paper begins with an introduction to the basic power control model of wind turbines. It then proceeds to discuss the limitations of conventional virtual inertia control methods. Building upon these limitations, corresponding improvement strategies are proposed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed strategies is validated through standard test cases.
