Identification of the Ground Wire-Suspension Clamp Damage Under the Effect of Lightning Current

Effective identification of the ground wiresuspension clamp damage under the effect of lightning currents is crucial for protecting both the clamps and the ground wires, ensuring normal operation of electrical equipment. Currently, infrared temperature measurement technology is primarily used to measure the temperature of the overall ground wire-suspension clamp. However, it cannot determine the location of the most severe heat and the specific temperature. This paper proposed a mechanical temperature-sensing device to replace the platen of clamp (hereinafter “platen-type device”). It triggers the response of the clamp when the temperature of the prominent part of the clamp reaches the specified temperature. Firstly, a simulation model of the component is established. Then, lightning current excitation is simulated, and the results are calculated to determine the main heating area of the clamp and the temperature change curve. Experimental results demonstrate that the platen-type device reliably operates at 80°C, indicating high reliability. Therefore, it can be applied in lightning strand damage identification technology.
